History of Mt. Hebrew A.M.E. Zion Church

"From Generation to Generation"

In the eighteenth century, Mount Hebrew’s name was Saint Steavens.  At that time, records reflected that members’ dues were ten to twenty-five cents a month.

 

In the late 1800’s and early 19th century, the church’s name became the Mount Hebrew AME Church.  Later, records show that "Zion" was added, and the church’s name became Mount Hebrew AME Zion Church.  Members of the church were James Ross, J.H. Rose, R.I. Pearson, Charles Ross, I.T. Williams, and many others that have gone from labor to eternal rest.

 

In the year of the Lord, April 11, 1911 a deed of trust was transacted between H.C. McMillan and his wife Nancy (of Robeson County) to Mount Hebrew AME Zion Church. 


The land was purchased for the amount twenty dollars.  The trustees at the time were Nathanial Ross, Sr., I.T. Williams, John Baxter, Malcolm Ross, and Nathanial Ross.

 

Henry Patterson married Maybell McLean.  The couple were the proud parents of 15 children.  Rev. Frank Patterson was one of the siblings of this union.  Later in the year 1927, Rev. Frank K. Patterson became the pastor of Mount Hebrew AME Zion Church.

 

In 1969, Mt. Hebrew was burned down and was later rebuilt by its members.

 

Some of the pastors that have served Mount Hebrew AME Zion church were: Reverend Richard Jackson. Reverends: Jones Sr., Moore, Marsh Burns. Brooks, Martin, Johnson, Jones Jr., Jordan, Molloy, Ford, McCoy, Strickland, Simmons, Dockery, Braggs,  Cromartie, Crowie, McMillan Thornton, and Julia McCallister. 

 

In November 2020, Reverend Charlene Gomez was installed as the Pastor of Mt. Hebrew AME Zion Church.
